Argon, Mythos, Sol: AI Labs Are Naming Models Like 1950s Cars
Argon, Mythos, Sol: evocative AI model names sit on access split by plan and surface. OneHuman's read: check the spec sheet, not the name.
Published: October 3, 2026 Impact: Medium. Affects anyone choosing a plan or model by its name.
Google's Gemini 4 Argon, Anthropic's Claude Mythos 5.1, OpenAI's GPT-6 Sol, and Meta's Muse Spark carry names that evoke a feeling, not a rank. That is OneHuman's read, not a claim about why any lab chose them. Most still carry a plain version number; the evocative word is the tier or variant word, and it says nothing about price, limits, or access. My analogy: Fairlane, Thunderbird, Bel Air. Aspiration over horsepower.
What Happened (This Week)
On September 30, Google announced Gemini 4 Argon, "rolling out to a set of trusted cyber defenders through our Fairwind Program," with wider release later "starting with paid API customers and Google AI Ultra subscribers." No date. Argon is a noble gas; the post doesn't explain the name.
Anthropic states that "Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1 are the same model, but with different levels of safeguards. Fable 5.1 is generally available, while Mythos 5.1 is available only through our trusted access programs."
| Name | What it evokes | Who can use it today | What the name tells you about price/limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Argon | An inert gas | Trusted cyber defenders (Fairwind Program) | Nothing |
| Mythos / Fable 5.1 | Legend / storybook | Fable: generally available. Mythos: vetted US organizations; also powers Claude Security | Nothing |
| Sol / Luna / Astra | Sun, moon, stars | Varies by model, plan, and surface | Nothing |
| Muse Spark | Inspiration | Meta's products | Nothing |
Meta uses one name three ways: Muse the agent, Muse Spark its model, "Muse Secure VM" its computer.
What This Means
Old tier words (mini, Flash, Pro, Ultra) at least implied an order. These don't.
The clearest case is in our record. "Sol" now denotes three models: GPT-5.6 Sol, the reasoning tier in ChatGPT Chat on Plus per OneHuman's Compare Page data; GPT-6 Sol, Work and Codex only; and GPT-6.1 Sol, also Work and Codex, where OpenAI's release notes say "starting with Pro users and expanding to Plus, Business, Enterprise, and Edu" while its announcement page says all paid tiers at once. OneHuman follows the release notes. BNA #29 covers the Chat gap.
Restricted-first releases appear in two cases, Mythos 5.1 and Argon. That is n=2, a co-occurrence, not a pattern. Fable 5.1 is the same model as Mythos and is generally available, and Sol, Astra, and Muse shipped as products. Labs cite safeguards for restricted releases.
Anthropic's design is the most transparent of the set: it states the two are the same model. Naming opacity is established ground: BNA #4 covered Mistral Vibe, BNA #6 covered Fable and Mythos.
Copilot, Perplexity, DeepSeek, and Grok use plain names, so this is a choice.
Consumer Protection Q&A
Q: Does an evocative name signal a better model? A: No. None carries rank, price, or limit information.
Q: Can I use Mythos 5.1? A: Only a set of vetted US organizations, through Anthropic's trusted access programs. For cybersecurity users that route is still future: the page says the Cyber Verification Program will include "access to Claude Mythos-class models" "in the near future."
Q: Is Argon available to subscribers? A: Not yet, and Google gives no date.
Q: Is this new? A: Evocative names are not; Claude's Haiku, Sonnet, and Opus date to March 2024. Newer is access that varies by surface (Chat, Work, Codex) as well as by plan.
What Happens Next
- 30 days: Does Google date Argon's subscriber release?
- 90 days: Does Mythos-class access reach the Cyber Verification Program?
- 6-12 months: Do labs publish a plain access table beside each name?
What to Do Next
- Before paying, find your plan and surface (Chat, Work, Codex, API) in the vendor's docs.
- Compare limits and price on the Compare Page, not the name.
- If two vendor pages disagree, check which is newer.
Bottom Line
What's real: names now sit on top of tier-and-surface access. What to watch: whether restricted-first releases stay at n=2. What's next: the spec sheet is the product.
